Other employers hire temporary and seasonal employees to cover for busy vacation times or for agriculture work when harvest rolls around. Hiring employees for seasonal work is an opportunity for employers to get to know potential long-term employees. Its a chance to observe how well a potential employee adapts to your culture and interacts with your other employees and your customers. Employers need to note some differences in how they schedule and pay seasonal help. More importantly, some of the rules have changed because of the adoption of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), or ObamaCare, as it is more commonly called. In President Trumps administration, you can expect that unterstellung changes may change more. This is a recommended time when you mi ght want to consult with your employment law attorney. Classifying Seasonal Employees The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which is the governing Federal labor law for seasonal workers, does not define full-time employment or part-time employment. That is a matter generally left for the employer to determine. Many employers define full-time employment as 30 or 32-plus hours a week. Because the number of employees you employ and the hours that they work during the prior year determines whether the employer must provide health coverage the following year, employers need to understand the ACA. Starting in 2013, many employers cut employees and seasonal employees hours back to 28 hours a week to ensure that something as simple as a bookkeeping error would not make a temporary employee eligible for health coverage. Two issues that employers need to know about the ACA are Seasonal employees, who work 120 days or less during a year, are not counted as employees for determining whether a company is a large (50 employees or more on average) or a small employer (under 50 employees on average).If a seasonal employee is working full-time, the employee may be eligible for healthcare coverage since eligibility is determined by hours worked month to month. (If you belong to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), this is a resource that further clarifies these rules.) Many seasonal employees work in retail and other businesses that are covered by the FLSA. This means that they must be paid the federal minimum wage or the minimum wage that was set by their state or local jurisdiction, whichever is higher. Employers must pay these seasonal workers overtime pay at a rate of one-and-a-half times their regular rate of pay for hours worked over 40 in a work week. This applies whether the employee is a temporary or seasonal employee or a full-time regular employee. In some instances, however, certain retail or service employees who are paid by commissionscould be exe mpt from overtime pay. Federal law does not limit the number of hours or times of day for employees who are 16 years and older, but many states have enacted more restrictive labor laws that have higher minimum standards that must be obeyed. Employees who are under 18 years old are limited in what they can do and must not be placed in hazardous occupations or given certain hazardous tasks to do. Millennials are more comfortable with video and onl ine representation. They think a paper resume is stagnant they cant deutsche bundespost or tweet it. They are shunning email.4. Recruiters are overwhelmed with various technologies and crunched for time. The average resume review time was 2030 seconds. Now, six seconds is the reported norm. Recruiters wont consider candidates who dont connect with the employers problems.5. Resumes will become an aggregation of social media. Some project less content but with more links to work, social media, video bios, contact options, infographics, and other online bio bits.6. LinkedIn is a complement to the resume, not a mirror. LinkedIn profiles should be more personal and more engaging than a resume. And as LinkedIn has become more robust, with the capability to link files, videos, portfolios, and other beneficial information, it often provides a portrait that is richer and deeper than a resume. Multimedia presentations, projects, and videos are more common elements of LI profiles. Summaries co ntinue to become more creative in presenting motivation, passion, and individuality.7. Each engineer choose which project received their individual contribution of $100. When polling the engineering teams about what FOSS projects have the most impact, a large number of those projects were from Apache. The ASF was officially organized 20 years ago to facilitate support and development of the Apache web server. It has since grown significantly, and now organizes hundreds of FOSS projects. A number of these projects are critical to our daily operations here at CarGurus, and we want to highlight the following twoApache Kafka is a massively scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed streaming platform used at CarGurus to process dealer inventory, site events, and site analytics. After having outgrown jgroups, Kafka allows us to reliably transport massive amounts of data, scale in response to demand, and facilitate low-latency access to data across the organization.Apache Airflow is the DAG-based ETL scheduling framework that enables our data engineering teams to centralize the companys data assets in timely, reliable fashion. It provides complex dependency management for modeling across hundreds of data sources, enables detailed introspection into status and timing, and powers our highly-concurrent distributed etl architecture.Due to the massive amount of software and libraries from Apache that power CarGurus, the OSF committee has chosen them as our highlight project, and granted them an additional $10,000 on top of our engineers votes.On-going supportThis isnt the end for the Open Source Fund, but just the beginning. We have commitment and support from management for continued funding, and the amount we give each quarter will increase as we grow the size of our engineering team. For some people, its an easy choice, but for most of us, its difficult to choose one way or the other.Its hard to choose because the introvert/extrovert dichotomy reflects a tired and outdated view of personality. Personality traits exist along a continuum, and the vast majority of us arent introverts or extroverts - we kiste somewhere in the middle.Personality consists of a stable set of preferences and tendencies through which we approach the world. Personality traits form at an early age and are fixed by early adulthood. Many important things about you change over the course of your lifetime, but your personality isnt one of them.Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. Bruce LeeThe continuum between introversion a nd extroversion captures one of the most important personality traits. Its troubling that were encouraged to categorize ourselves one way or the other because there are critical strengths and weaknesses commonly associated with each type.Adam Grant at Wharton set out to study this phenomenon, and his findings are fascinating. First, he found that two-thirds of people dont strongly identify as introverts or extroverts. These people (aka, the vast majority of us) are called ambiverts, who have both introverted and extroverted tendencies. The direction ambiverts lean toward varies greatly, depending on the situation.Think of introversion and extroversion as a spectrum, with ambiversion lying somewhere in the middleAmbiverts have a distinct advantage over true introverts and extroverts. Because their personality doesnt lean too heavily in either direction, they have a much easier time adjusting their approach to people based on the situation. This enables them to connect mora easily, an d more deeply, with a wider variety of people.Grants research also disproved the powerful and widely held notion that the best-performing salespeople are extroverts. He found that ambiverts greater social flexibility enabled them to outsell all other groups, moving 51 percent more product per hour than the average salesperson. Notice how sales increased as extroversion increased, peaking with those who were just moderately extroverted.Grant explained the finding this wayBecause they naturally engage in a flexible pattern of talking and listening, ambiverts are likely to express sufficient assertiveness and enthusiasm to persuade and close a sale, but are more inclined to listen to customers interests and less vulnerable to appearing too excited or overconfident.How ambiversion works in the brainHow social you are is largely driven by dopamine, the brains feel-good hormone. We all have different levels of dopamine-fueled stimulation in the neocortex (the area of the brain that is res ponsible for higher mental functions such as language and conscious thought). Those who naturally have high levels of stimulation tend to be introverts - they try and avoid any extra social stimulation that might make them feel anxious or overwhelmed. Those with low levels of stimulation tend to be extroverts. Under-stimulation leaves extroverts feeling bored, so they seek social stimulation to feel good.Most peoples levels of natural stimulation dont reach great extremes, though it does fluctuate. Sometimes you may feel the need to seek out stimulation, while other times, you may avoid it.Finding out whether youre an ambivertIts important to pin down where you fall in the introversion/extroversion scale. By increasing your awareness of your type, you can develop a better sense of your tendencies and play to your strengths.If you think that you might be an ambivert, but arent certain, see how many of the following statements apply to you. If most of them apply, youre most likely an ambivert.I can perform tasks alone or in a group. I dont have much preference either way.Social settings dont make me uncomfortable, but I tire of being around people too much.Being the center of attention is fun for me, but I dont like it to last.Some people think Im quiet, while others think Im highly social.I dont always need to be moving, but too much downtime leaves me feeling bored.I can get lost in my own thoughts just as easily as I can lose myself in a conversation.Small talk doesnt make me uncomfortable, but it does get boring.When it comes to trusting other people, sometimes Im skeptical, and other times, I dive right in.If I spend too much time alone, I get bored, yet too much time around other people leaves me feeling drained.The trick to being an ambivert is knowing when to force yourself to lean toward one side of the spectrum when it isnt happening naturally. Ambiverts with low self-awareness struggle with this. For example, at a networking event, a self-aware ambiv ert will lean toward the extroverted side of the scale, even when it has been a long day and he or she has had enough of people. Mismatching your approach to the situation can be frustrating, ineffective, and demoralizing for ambiverts.Bringing it all togetherTalentSmart has conducted research with over a million people and found that those in the upper echelon of performance at work also tend to be highly self-aware (90 percent of them, in fact). By gaining a better sense of where you fall on the introversion/extroversion scale, you can build insight into your tendencies and preferences, which increases your self-awareness and emotional intelligence.
